How It Works

What Is a Hybrid Rooftop Unit?

A hybrid RTU is a packaged rooftop unit with two heat sources: an air-source heat pump and a natural gas furnace. In mild weather the heat pump moves heat from outdoor air into your building, and in summer it provides cooling. When temperatures drop, the controls bring in the gas furnace so occupants stay comfortable.

It's a packaged rooftop unit that combines an air-source heat pump with natural gas backup heating. The heat pump handles cooling and most of the heating, and the gas furnace takes over or assists in very cold weather.

03What switchover temperature is required?

The controls must allow a switchover temperature of 30°F (-1.1°C) or below, or allow the heat pump and gas furnace to run at the same time. The switchover temperature is the outdoor temperature at or below which the unit changes settings to maintain heating efficiency and comfort.

04Does my project have to be a replacement?

No. Eligible projects either replace an existing natural gas RTU or add hybrid RTUs to a new construction building.

05What equipment isn't eligible?

Split systems, standalone furnaces, make-up air units and dedicated outdoor air systems aren't eligible. Units are also excluded if cooling is provided by natural gas chillers, if they directly serve kitchen spaces, or if the space is unconditioned.
