Are Ductless Air Conditioners Better Than Window Air Conditioners?

Purchasing an air conditioner can be a large investment; this leads Canadian homeowners to understandably seek out alternative options that may save them some money on their purchase. If you don’t have ductwork in your home or you’re interested in supplemental cooling, you may be tempted to purchase one or two window air conditioners to save money, after all, are ductless air conditioners really better than window air conditioners? Here’s what you need to know.

Window Air Conditioners

Window air conditioners have been used in Canadian homes during the summer for decades and we understand why. They usually have a cheap (or cheaper) upfront cost and you can install them yourself. Unfortunately, that’s usually where the advantages of window air conditioners end. There are far more disadvantages to installing a window air conditioner in your home than there are advantages.

These disadvantages include:

  • Window air conditioners do not help control humidity or moisture in the air
  • They work less effectively the hotter the weather becomes
  • They can become a hazard due to their size and weight
  • They’re very loud
  • They can produce odd smells
  • They tend to leak in your home
  • They require more repairs and replacements than ductless AC
  • They must be taken down and stored away in the fall and winter
Ductless Air Conditioners

Ductless air conditioners are similar in concept to window air conditioners where they work independently from your home’s ductwork and can be installed individually in separate rooms to control individual airflow and climate. However, their similarities are limited to those two examples, as ductless air conditioners are more efficient, more effective, proficient in humidity and moisture control, need very little maintenance and repair, have a longer lifespan and work with very little noise. Where window air conditioners fall short, ductless air conditioners excel, and although they are more costly upfront, they will save you money on energy, repair, and replacement costs.

The Better Option

While it can be very tempting to just throw caution to the wind and purchase the cheaper option, window air conditioners just cannot compete with the many advantages of ductless air conditioners.
